Setting up Email on an iPhone/iPad

The guide below will walk you through setting up email on an iPhone/iPad. You will need the following prerequisites before you begin.

  • Know if you want to set up a POP or IMAP account. How do I decide?
  • Know your email address and password
  • Know what mail server you need to connect to. Where do I find this?
  • Have an iPhone/iPad with the latest iOS version installed

Setting up Email on an iPhone/iPad

  1. From the Home screen tap Settings
  2. Tap Passwords & Accounts
  3. Tap Add Account
  4. Tap Other
  5. Tap Add Mail Account
  6. Fill in the fields and tap Next
    • Enter your name
    • Enter your email
    • Enter your email password
    • Enter a description for you to identify the account on your phone
  7. Tap IMAP or POP (from prerequisites, usually IMAP)
  8. Under Incoming Mail Server fill in the fields
    • Enter Domain Name (from prerequisites, usually mail.yourdomain.com)
    • Enter your email address for the User Name
    • Enter your email password
  9. Under Outgoing Mail Server fill in the fields (not optional)
    • Enter Domain Name (from prerequisites, usually mail.yourdomain.com)
    • Enter your email address for the User Name
    • Enter your email password
  10. Tap Next
  11. Choose what to sync (at least Mail) with your phone then tap Save

Congratulations, you have successfully set up email on your iPhone/iPad. If you are having any issues refer to the troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting

Power cycling the iPhone/iPad may fix any issues and should be tried first before any of the steps below. To power cycle, hold down the power button then slide to turn off. Wait for 30 seconds and then press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo.

Some carriers don't allow simultaneous internet connection during a phone call. The account may fail to verify if you are atempting to create the account during a phone call.

Can't send mail

  1. From the Home screen tap Settings
  2. Tap Passwords & Accounts
  3. Tap on your email account
  4. Tap the line that says Account you@yourdomain.com
  5. Under Outgoing Mail Server tap SMTP mail.yourdomain.com
  6. Under Primary Server tap mail.yourdomain.com
  7. Under Outgoing Mail Server fill out the fields
    • Enter Domain for the Host Name (from prerequisites, usually mail.yourdomain.com)
    • Enter your full email address for the User Name
    • Enter your email password for the Password
    • Use SSL turned On
    • Authentication needs to be set to Password
    • Server Port needs to be set to 465
  8. Tap Done

Can't receive mail

  1. From the Home screen tap Settings
  2. Tap Passwords & Accounts
  3. Tap on your email account
  4. Tap the line that says Account you@yourdomain.com
  5. Under Incoming Mail Server fill out the fields
    • Enter Domain for Host Name (from prerequisites, usually mail.yourdomain.com)
    • Enter your full email address for the User Name
    • Enter your email password for the Password
  6. Tap Advanced
  7. Use SSL turned On
  8. Authentication needs to be set to Password
  9. Server Port needs to be set to 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP
  10. Tap Account
  11. Tap Done
